GreenUPorto celebrates the World Soil Day

On December 5th, GreenUPorto joins research and political stakeholders in a set of activities to celebrate the Soil

On December 5, GreenUPorto will once again celebrate the World Soil Day with a special event.

The event, taking place at the Library of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto and initiating at 2 p.m., will join together stakeholders from the research community and political spheres to discuss the national politics regarding our Soil.

Soil conservation is increasingly a highly relevant topic, covered by all European policies and the recent proposal for a soil monitoring and resilience directive.

Concerns about the soil are part of the daily lives of everyone who closely manages this environmental matrix and depends on it more directly. However, society, in a transversal way, from the youngest to the oldest, does not seem to be properly informed and alert to the problems associated with its quality and health & about the role of each one of us in promoting it.

The celebration of this day thus becomes extremely important to contribute to a more informed and active citizenship.

In this context, the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, as well as its Research Centers GreenUPorto/INOV4Agro, CIIMAR and CERENA, in conjunction with the Portuguese Partnership for Soils & the Portuguese Society of Soil Sciences, will celebrate the day with a set of activities especially dedicated to the topic of Soil.

The program will include a talk on «Contributions from the EU Soil Observatory to the New Soil Monitoring and Resilience Directive Proposal and to the EU Soil Health», by elements from the European Comission, as well as a debate on «Soil Conservation and Public Politics in Portugal», among political, academic and production stakeholders. It will also include a presentation of «the Soil of the Year» and a «World Café» around the analysis of the European politics for soil management.

The event is free and open to anyone following registration at: tinyurl.com/bd6dsvyb
