- FTIR instruments do have some disadvantages as compared to dispersive instruments.
- Firstly, FTIR instruments do not measure spectra; they measure interferograms. Interferograms are difficult to interpret without first performing a Fourier transform to produce a spectrum.
- This used to be a major problem, but since the dramatic increase in computing power, performing a Fourier transform is now a quick and easy process.
- However, the way the interferogram is transformed can affect the results, and so care must be taken.
