Teaching

Since 1986, when she joined FCUP as Trainee Research Assistant, Joana Fernandes has taught more than 30 different curricular units, though some of them with a similar syllabus in the following main topics:

  • Remote Sensing
  • Hydrographic Surveying
  • Geodesy
  • Surveying
  • Satellite Orbits

In 2000, she had a major role in the proposal of the MSc in Remote Sensing, the first and unique MSc degree in this field in Portugal until present. This MSc programme had four editions, opening every second year: between 2000 and 2008. This MSc was never adapted to the Bologna Process, being discontinued in 2008. In 2017 she was the responsible for the proposal of a new MSc in Remote Sensing, approved by A3ES in March 2018.

Main topic of research: Remote Sensing - Satellite Altimetry

In the last two decades, the research has been focused on satellite altimetry, in the following two main topics:

  1. Development of methodologies for improving the range and geophysical corrections required to derive accurate surface heights from satellite altimeter observations, with focus on coastal and inland water regions.
  2. Satellite altimetry applications to e.g. the determination of the marine gravity field, ocean circulation and sea level studies, both at global and regional scale.

This research has been developed in the scope of projects funded by FCT and mainly by ESA.
