EMPLOYMENT
|
Requimte/Departamento de Química, Porto Dec 2005 to present |
Investigador Auxiliar I am currently employed as an "Investigador Auxiliar"(Assistant Researcher), by the REQUIMTE, and I work in the Chemistry Department, University of Porto, using Atomic Force Microscopy to study Electroactive polymers, nanoparticle-based genetic diagnostic devices, artificial metallosurfactant-based vesicles, proteoliposomes and Langmuir-Blodgett films. |
|
Departamento de Química, Porto Oct 2004 to Dec 2005 |
FCT Research Fellow FCT funded postdoctoral project on novel AFM measurements of conducting films and nanostructures. |
|
Instituto de Investigaciones Quimicas, Seville, Spain Jan 2002 to Sept 2004 |
Becario (Research Fellow) EU / Spanish Ministry of Education and Science funded project on interactions between carbohydrate functionalised nanoparticles and DNA. Making Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM) measurements of nanoparticle - DNA interactions. I also studied carbohydrate-carbohydrate interactions with the AFM, and made tribological measurements on thin films using the AFM. |

Research Associate. Studying a range of surfaces, especially polymer surfaces using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Developing new analysis techniques using the AFM. Producing polymer film samples, characterising using AFM and contact-angle goniometry and mapping adhesion forces and mechanical parameters across the polymer. Also developing analysis software to process and display the results. Also responsible for running of FTIR unit in the School of Pharmacy. |

Materials Research Institute, Sheffield Hallam University, 1998 |
Ph.D. Ph.D. project investigating the mechanisms of adhesion in glass / PVC / organosilane laminates. This was achieved by using infrared, Raman microscopic and thermal measurements to assess the interdiffusion of the PVC and organosilane materials, and the reactions that occur in the bulk polymer and at the interfaces. |
| Institute of Polymer Technology and Materials Engineering, Loughborough University of Technology, 1995 |
MSc. in Polymer Technology Including optional module in polymer science. The research project was to devise, develop and assess a novel nylon to rubber adhesion system, using no adhesive interlayer. The work was carried out in collaboration with Avon - Clevite limited. |
|
Chemistry Department, University of York, 1994 |
BSc. Honours in Chemistry ( Class II/ii ) A modular course, in which specialised options were materials science, computers in chemistry, catalysis, energy studies, advanced physical chemistry, and fast reactions. The final year research project involved the investigation of a novel thermoreversible gel. |
