FOTOCATGRAF – Graphene-based semiconductor photocatalysis for a safe and sustainable water supply: an advanced technology for emerging pollutants removal - UTAP-ICDT/CTM-NAN/0025/2014

FOTOCATGRAF is an R&D&I project funded by FCT in the framework of the UT Austin|Portugal Program in the area of Emerging Technologies. It involves a multidisciplinary team composed by three Portuguese Associated Laboratories REQUIMTE, CICECO and INESC-TEC, one USA partner, the UT Austin, and the portuguese company Águas do Centro Litoral (AdCL), S.A., Grupo Águas de Portugal. The team has recognized skills and expertise as well as cutting-edge facilities in the fields of (Nano)materials, Eco-sustainable (Photo)Catalysis, Analytical Chemistry, Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technologies, Wireless Sensor Networks and Data Mining. The project aims at developing a new advanced graphene-based technology for the removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater to ensure a safer and sustainable water supply.

Context

New emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, hormones and their metabolites are being detected in water/wastewater, which can have a tremendous impact on the environment and human health. In this sense, the quest for new advanced technologies for a safe and sustainable water supply is one of the grand global challenges of the 21st century. Nanotechnology-enabled photocatalytic water treatment processes emerge as new opportunities to develop the next-generation of water supply and wastewater treatments to produce higher quality water.

Goals

  1. Novel graphene-based nanophotocatalysts with excellent performance in solar-driven degradation of emerging pollutants at laboratorial scale.

  2. Optimized analytical tools to detect and quantify emerging pollutants and metabolites in wastewaters.

  3. Data mining system for monitoring pollutants, including the ability to: (i) early warning of unusual events; and (ii) forecasting models that can anticipate unwanted situations allowing preventive actions to be carried out in advance.

  4. Microcontroller device with electrochemical sensor and a wireless sensor network that monitors the concentrations of the pollutants in WWTP and automatically forwards the data to a repository.

  5. Transferability of solar-driven graphene-based photocatalysts with the best performance in the removal of emerging pollutants to pilot WWTP in AdCL.
